Marcel Goc
Marcel Goc was drafted 20th overall in the first round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks. Originally from Calw, Germany, he spent time with Schwenningen and Adler Mannheim in the DEL (Germany’s top hockey league) until 2003. During his final year in the DEL, he helped Adler Mannheim win the German Cup title. He spent the 2003-04 regular season in the AHL with the Cleveland Barons and made his NHL debut when he appeared in 5 of San Jose’s 17 post-season games until they were eliminated in the Western Conference finals by the Calgary Flames. He also scored his first NHL goal, the series-winner, in game six of the Western Conference semi-finals against the Colorado Avalanche. After spending the 2004-05 lockout season in the AHL with the Cleveland Barons, he spent the following four seasons (2005-2009) playing solely in the NHL with the San Jose Sharks. His best season so far was in 2005-06, where he set career-highs in games played (81), goals (8), assists (14) and points (22) that have not yet been broken. He set other career-highs in 2006-07 with a -2 rating and 24 penalty minutes. In each of his four seasons in the NHL, he helped the Sharks make it to the playoffs every time. In August 2009, he signed as a free agent with the Nashville Predators to a one-year contract. In international hockey, he represented Germany in numerous tournaments, including the 2003 World Junior Championships, the 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008 World Championships, the 2004 World Cup and the 2006 Olympics, just to name a few. At 6’1 and around 200 pounds, Goc owns good two-way skills, has great speed and can play either center or left wing position. He is also good on face-offs and at blocking shots. However, he doesn’t have great offensive numbers and his overall plus/minus rating is quite low.
