Matt Hunwick was drafted 224th overall in the seventh round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins. The Warren, Michigan native played four years with the University of Michigan in the CCHA from 2003-2007. During those four years, he was named to the CCHA All-Rookie Team, CCHA First and Second All-Star Teams and the NCAA West Second All-American Team. He was also named the CCHA’s best defensive defenseman in 2006-07 and was voted the club’s top defenseman by his teammates in each of his last three years. He was named alternate captain in 2005-06 and then served as captain the following year. He signed with the Boston Bruins and appeared in 13 NHL games during the 2007-08 season, including his debut on November 10th against the Buffalo Sabres. He spent the rest of the season with their AHL team, the Providence Bruins, where he helped them win the Atlantic Division title. He played in 53 games with Boston during the 2008-09 season and recorded his first career goal on November 17, 2008 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He then got into his first NHL fight on January 10th against Justin Williams of the Carolina Hurricanes, knocking Williams down with one punch. He played in one post-season game against the Montreal Canadiens before he was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery for a ruptured spleen, missing the rest of the playoffs. He then re-signed with the Bruins to a multi-year contract during the off-season. In international hockey, he played for Team USA at the 2004 and 2005 World Junior Championships, where he won a gold medal in his first appearance. Hunwick is a good two-way player who has great puck-handling skills. But at only 5’11 and around 190 pounds, he’s considered a small player who needs to adapt more to the NHL level in order to succeed as a top six defenseman.
