(LW)
Brooks Laich was born in Saskatchewan and began his career playing for the Moose Jaw Warriors in the WHL in 2000-2001. He was drafted 193rd overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators. Laich continued to play for the Warriors in the WHL for part of the next season, but then headed to the Seattle Thunderbirds in the same league for the better part of two seasons. In 2003-2004, Laich was called to the Binghamton Senators in the AHL, which was the Ottawa team's affiliate. He was called up for one NHL game that season with the Ottawa club, but was sent back down to the Binghamton Senators after that. Laich also spent time in 2003-2004 with the AHL Portland Pirates after being traded to the Washington Capitals. His journey in 2003-2004 also got him ice time in four games with the Washington Capitals. Laich reported to the Portland Pirates during the NHL lockout season, then split time with the AHL Hershey Bears and the Washington Capitals in the following year. Finally, in 2005-2006, Laich had earned a full-time roster spot with the Capitals and has never looked back. He is a versatile player that has demonstrated an ability to light up the scoreboard and play quality defensive hockey. Laich is a solid team player, too. He will likely not be a big scorer at the NHL level, so he'll need to discover a role to fit into on his team. Laich will need to work on consistency, too, in order to make an impact. At this point, he's a likely candidate for a career fourth line player.
