Cam Ward Out 3-4 Weeks
Expected to miss a minimum of 3-4 weeks, Carolina Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward will be out of action after suffering a cut to the leg during Saturday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
According to the Canadian Press, “Ward will remain at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus through Sunday night, and will be re-evaluated by Hurricanes’ Head Orthopedic Physician Dr. Marty Isbell when he returns to Raleigh on Monday.”
The incident on Sunday, in which the skate of either Rick Nash or a defenceman nicked Ward in the leg, wasn’t the first time the goalie had gone down with such an injury. The skate of former New York Rangers forward Brad Isbister sliced Ward’s knee during a game in March 2007, causing Ward to call it the worst injury he’d suffered playing hockey.
Michael Leighton replaced Ward in goal and will probably do so for the next few weeks in a supportive role, although some analysts predict that the Hurricanes will attempt to sign a goaltender in order to provide more confidence for the players in front. Somebody along the lines of a Curtis Sanford could be a nice fit in Carolina.
The injury reinforces the bad luck many are feeling right now in Carolina. It also reinforces the injury bug that seems to be ripping through Team Canada Olympic hopefuls. Add Ward to a list that already includes the likes of Roberto Luongo, Simon Gagne and Marc Savard among others and things are looking a little bleak.
Of course, most are banking on Ward’s recovery slipping right into the predicted time period. Hopefully the cut wasn’t deep enough to leave any lasting damage, both for the sake of Canes fans and those looking at shaping up the Team Canada roster.
